Throwing things out of cars has become a common practice here. People dont think twice before dumping all kinds of food waste, papers and bottles out on the roads.
First reason why this happens is there is no awareness or a sense of righteousness that makes them wonder if there is anything wrong in it. In future I hope kids would have a whole new subject at school on keeping your world clean. But those who already finished schools could only be made aware through strict regulations send through media so everyone knows. We will need the help of the law and the government for this. I’d like to leave this thread open for suggestions on what we, as common citizens can do about it.
Are public messages saying “Please dont throw out things from car on the streets. Keep your city clean” possible? In boards in big font. There is so much of space used for ads in roads… so this should be possible too – its to serve a good purpose.
Second reason is because people say they dont have a place to dump it all. Its quite easy to carry a big cover or packet to dump all your trash and keep it aside, or in the trunk until you find a garbage bin to dispose it. Please do that, since that can be done without depending on any higher authority, all by ourselves – its quite easy and possible. By a small effort from our side, we can do a lot for the place we live in.

Avoiding throwing trash out of Cars is really no big deal. So far I believe India is the only which is finding difficulty in avoiding this. I second Crissie’s thought here, one can always save the trash in a bag and put it away when he finds a bin.
(in fact they got cameras on points) . And now,you would find a piece of trash anywhere on the roads/highways. Hope to see this happening at my India too
Of course, americans also found hard to keep up with this “good” “tough” habit. They simply came up with “1000$” fine for littering

I think people are generally aware, but think since municipal sweepers are paid to clean, it’s their job to clean up. In Mumbai, there are huge hoardings by Hindustan Times showing garbage thrown from a car – if you click such a picture and send it to HT, you may get paid for it. Still I see no change. There are huge hoardings saying how much is the fine for throwing garbage.
Before most movies, there’s this piece showing all the garbage thrown by a family during an outing waits for them at their house when they come back. And Sharuk Khan says to keep the city clean.
Yet no change in people’s behaviour.
Not just awareness, we need to instill civic sense. How? that’s the question

You know ends at this point – “people”. Its ‘We’ who are responsible for our actions. Now its this tough put this through hardened people’s brains to keep themselves clean and the streets clean. We can atleast educate our children about social responsibilities so that our further generations live in a better place
